Like most of the caribbean islands, Martinique posesses a carefree, relaxed attitude and a laid-back style.  Light summer clothing may be worn all year, although you may want a lightweight sweater or shawl for evenings during the winter months.   The weather year-round on Martinique is sunny, warm and humid, so to be comfortable you'll want to wear fabrics that are light in both weight and color (dark colors absorb more heat from the sun), and those that breathe, such as cotton and/or fabrics that wick away moisture, such as microfiber.  Whether you're on (or close to) the beautiful Martinique beaches or up higher on the gentle slopes or hills surrounding Mt. Nevis, there is a nice evening breeze off the ocean that can be cool, so you may want something to cover your arms.

Generally speaking, dress is informal even at many hotels and plantation inns, but this doesn't mean slovenly.   You may want to dress up a bit for dinner, particularly if you visit some of the nicer restaurants - think "casual elegant" - but "formal dress" is not required anywhere, and neither are jackets or ties for men.   Casual slacks or a sundress and sandals are fine, but jeans, very short shorts, or tiny, midriff-baring tank tops are not appropriate.  The key is to be tastefully comfortable in a tropical climate, so lightweight breathable cotton fabrics are best.

Typically you'll see men wearing dress shorts (bermuda-style are popular) or khakis (on cooler winter mornings or evenings) with a tropical-style short-sleeved linen or cotten/linen shirt - yes, even the traditional "hawaiian shirt" look is still popular - although more often guys are wearing it in subdued, or even monochromatic, colors.  Ladies fashions vary more (don't they always!) so you'll see everything from sarongs worn as skirts (short or long) with a tasteful tank top or a short-sleeved or sleeves blouse, to shorts and halter-tops (never anything too short or revealing though) for daytime, and casual cocktail-length dresses and sundresses for evenings.  On occasion you'll see a longer halter-style dress when it's cooler.   They typical "little black dress" is perfect for a nice dinner.

Be sure to take a pair of comfortable shoes for walking - Martinique has many places to hike or do some sightseeing when you're not on the beach - along with a lightweight, long-sleeved top to layer over a tanktop if you plan to climb Mt. Nevis - it can be quite a bit cooler at the top!

Topless Attitude:

Nudity, including toplessness, is not permitted at any beach - it is in fact illegal on Martinique.  Swim wear or scant clothing should never be worn in restaurants, shops, towns, or villages on Martinique.  Although the attitude is relaxed and casual, it is somewhat conservative and dressing in a manner that is overly provocative is disapproved of.
